Approximately 150 species of Viburnum are known from North America, Europe, Asia and northern Africa. The Awabuki Viburnum is a large shrub from Asia that can be trimmed as a small tree. It can grow up to 20 ft tall and equally as wide.

It has shiny evergreen leaves. Flowers are small and inconspicuous but reported as fragrant. Fruits are red. Its ability to grow in soils with concentrations of heavy metals is reported from China.

It likes full sun to part shade, is moderately drought tolerant, responds well to irrigation, and likes average soil.
