Rhapis excelsa is a broadleaf lady palm or bamboo palm native to southern China and northern Vietnam. The genus name is Greek, meaning “needle,” and the species name is Latin for “tall.”

The Rhapis excelsa, a plant that can grow up to 4m in height and 33mm in diameter, is a true marvel of nature. Its multi-stemmed clumps bear glossy, palmate evergreen leaves, each divided into broad, ribbed segments. The unique saw-toothed leaf-ends, unlike most other palms, add to its beauty, occurring on slender petioles.

This usually dioecious palm species produces a small inflorescence at the top of the plant with spirally arranged, fleshy yellow flowers containing three petals fused at the base. Ripe fruit are fleshy and white.
