Native to the southeastern U.S., the Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) is an evergreen shrub with vibrant red berries and a rich cultural history. Native Americans brewed a special drink from its leaves for use in ceremonial rites, and it is the only plant native to North America that contains caffeine.
The Yaupon Holly can is often seen along the coast in sandy soils, acting as a windbreak and stabilizing dunes.
