Erythrina herbacea is commonly known as the coral bean, Cherokee bean, Mamou plant, red cardinal, or cardinal spear. It is a flowering shrub or small tree found throughout the southeastern United States and northeastern Mexico.

Coral Bean captivates with its vivid red flowers, giving any landscape a burst of color. However, care should be exercised, as every part of this plant is poisonous. In nature, it serves as a visual warning to potential predators.

This plant can grow up to 16 feet tall in areas where freezing temperatures will stop growth. The stems are covered in curved spines. The leaves are yellowish-green and divided into three arrow-shaped leaflets. The bark is smooth and light gray.
