Elaeagnus pungens is a flowering plant in the family Elaeagnaceae. It is commonly known as the thorny olive, spiny oleaster, and silverthorn. It is native to Asia, including China, Japan, and the southeastern United States.

It sprouts from its stem by spreading out and twining into adjacent vegetation. Parts of the stem are covered in thorns, which can be up to 4 inches long. The evergreen has alternate leaves that grow up to 4 inches long. The undersides are silvery white and sweet-scented.

Elaeagnus pungens, known as Silverthorn, considered invasive in north Florida, is an evergreen shrub that can grow from 3 to 25 feet. Due to its dense growth, it is often used for hedges in North Florida​​​​. Its sweet gardenia-like fragrant flowers attract butterflies; the fruit is a bird food source.
