Celtis occidentalis (Common Hackberry)
Celtis occidentalis (Common Hackberry)

Celtis occidentalis, also known as the common hackberry, is a deciduous tree that forms a rounded vase shape and can reach heights of 40 to 80 feet. It is a rapid grower and is known for its edible fruits, which are favored by birds.

This tree, beyond its aesthetic appeal, is a valuable asset to the environment. Its drought tolerance and the history of its medicinal use by Native Americans are just a part of its story. It also plays a crucial role in the ecosystem of North Florida, serving as a larval host for several butterfly species, inspiring appreciation for its ecological significance.

It is a moderately long-lived hardwood with a light-colored wood, yellowing gray to light brown with yellow streaks. It has a slender trunk and grows in the best conditions, such as the Mississippi Valley, which prefers rich, moist soil, but will grow on gravelly or rocky hillsides.
