Acer palmatum ‘Tamukeyama’ is commonly known as the Japanese Maple ‘Tamukeyama.’ It is a dwarf, mound-forming, deciduous shrub or small tree with powerfully cascading branches that form a graceful, dome-shaped specimen over time. The delicate foliage of finely cut leaves emerges deep crimson-red in the spring and changes to a very dark purple-red in the summer. In the fall, the leaves turn bright scarlet before shedding to the ground.

Acer palmatum ‘Tamukeyama’ is a versatile plant, capable of adapting to different light conditions. It can grow up to 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide, thriving in both full sun and part shade. However, for the best leaf color, it is recommended to provide partial shade. The plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, and well-drained soil. Be mindful of soil moisture and sun exposure, as a lack of the former or excessive of the latter can cause leaf scorch.

This low-maintenance plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant seasons and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in the spring before leaves emerge. It is native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia.
