Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the wild banana or giant white bird of paradise, is a species of banana-like plants with erect woody stems reaching up to 26 feet tall. The clumps formed can spread as far as 11 feet.

The leaves grow up to 11 inches long, are grey-green, and are arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. The inflorescence is composed of dark blue bracts, white sepals, and a bluish-purple ‘tongue’. The entire flower can be as much as 7 inches high and 18 inches long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem. Triangular seed capsules follow the flowers.

The white bird of paradise is among the few plants that have been found to contain the pigment bilirubin, which is usually found in animals.
