Tradescantia ohiensis (Bluejacket)
Tradescantia ohiensis (Bluejacket)

Tradescantia ohiensis, known as Bluejacket or Ohio Spiderwort, is a native North Floridian species that serves as an essential food source for long-tongued bees and other pollinators thanks to its striking blue to purple flowers. Fantastic fact: this species is one of few known tissues that can be an effective watchdog for high radiation levels. Its stamen hairs change color in response to radiation and chemical pollutants!

It is a flowering vine that is prickly with one-seeded fruit. This plant prefers full sun but can also survive in partial shade. It prefers moist soil, but it is tolerant of numerous soil types. They are commonly found in wooded disturbed areas.
