Salvia lyrata (Lyreleaf Sage)
Salvia lyrata (Lyreleaf Sage)

Salvia lyrata, or lyreleaf sage, is a native north Floridian perennial that is an important nectar source for a host of bees and butterflies. The leaves have been traditionally used as a mild astringent and are included in herbal remedies for skin conditions.

Lyreleaf sage forms a basal rosette of leaves that are up to 8 inches, broadening toward the tip. The leaves have irregular margins and are typically pinnately lobed or cut, looking like a lyre. The center vein is sometimes dark wine-purple. A square-shaped hairy stem up to 2 ft long grows from the rosette, with uneven whorls or two-lipped lavender to blue flowers.
