Juniperus horizontalis, commonly known as the creeping juniper, is a low-growing shrub native to North America, throughout most of Canada from Yukon east to Newfoundland and some of the northern United States.

With its impressive ability to survive in poor soil and protect against erosion, creeping juniper is often used to stabilize hillsides. Its dense mat-like form provides excellent wildlife habitat for small animals and birds. The creeping juniper is also known for its tolerance to cold, making it a hardy ground cover even in northern climates.

The leaves are arranged in opposite decussate pairs or occasionally in whorls of three. The cones are berry-like and dark blue, with a pale blue-white waxy bloom and two seeds.
