Chlorophytum comosum, commonly called spider plant, ribbon plant, and hen and chickens, is a species of evergreen perennial flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae. It is native to tropical and southern Africa but has become naturalized in other parts of the world, including western Australia and Bangladesh.

It grows up to 24 inches tall and has fleshy tuberous roots that each grow up to 4 inches long. The flowers are produced in a long, branched inflorescence that can reach up to 30 inches and eventually bend downward to meet the earth.

NASA recognizes it as one of the top three houseplants for eliminating air toxins, including benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and xylene—a solvent found in leather, rubber, and printing processes. This awesome helper plant is deemed safe for homes with pets.
